In practice it means paying attention to things that are hard to see in a photograph. The weight of a wool. Whether a jacket is fully canvassed. Whether the denim was woven on a shuttle loom. Whether the maker still owns the factory.

The brands in this edit approach that from different directions. A.PRESSE rebuilds mid-century silhouettes with obsessive material sourcing. Margaret Howell has been doing restrained British tailoring for fifty years. Norse Projects works the Scandinavian side. What they share is a refusal to design for the feed.
