Needles built a large part of its reputation on the HD pant and the track pant, both cut wide. Kapital runs its own extremes. Norse Projects and orSlow sit closer to a wide chino or fatigue.

Break is the detail people get wrong. A wide leg wants little to no break, sitting just on the top of the shoe. Too long and the volume collapses into a puddle at the ankle.

It depends on your height more than anything. A good starting point is a leg opening around 22 to 24 centimetres. Beyond that you are into a deliberately dramatic proportion that needs the rest of the outfit built around it.

With no break or a very slight one, sitting just on top of the shoe. Length is the single most common thing people get wrong with the silhouette.

Shoes with visual weight. Loafers, derbies, boots and chunkier sneakers all hold up. A thin, low-profile shoe disappears under the hem.

What tops work with wide leg trousers?

Something with structure or volume of its own. A boxy knit, a chore coat or a shorter jacket balances the leg. A slim fitted top exaggerates the contrast in a way that rarely works.
