The trench has been reworked enough times that the military details are now purely decorative. Storm flap, epaulettes, D-ring belt, all vestigial. What remains is a long, weather-resistant coat that covers a suit and does not look like an anorak.

The modern versions have loosened considerably. Norse Projects flagged the trench as a hero piece for the season and cuts it with more room than the traditional pattern. Margaret Howell keeps the British proportions. Nanamica builds it in GORE-TEX for anyone who wants the shape to actually keep the rain out.

It is the coat that carries the most in a Melbourne winter, where a heavy wool overcoat is often too much and a shell is not enough.

What is the point of the details on a trench coat?

Almost nothing now. The storm flap, epaulettes, D-ring belt and gun flap all had military functions that no longer apply. What survives is a long, weather-resistant coat that covers tailoring without looking like an anorak.

How long should a trench coat be?

Below the knee is traditional. Modern cuts run anywhere from mid-thigh to mid-calf. Anything shorter than mid-thigh reads as a jacket rather than a coat.

Is a trench coat waterproof?

Traditional cotton gabardine is water resistant and will handle a shower but not sustained rain. Technical versions in GORE-TEX, including from Nanamica, are genuinely waterproof.

Can a trench coat be worn casually?

Yes, and the newer looser cuts are made for it. Over a knit and denim with a boot or loafer works better than the traditional belted-over-a-suit approach.
