Overcoat

Men's overcoats from A.PRESSE, Margaret Howell, Norse Projects and Kapital. Wool, melton and cashmere blends in balmacaan, chesterfield and relaxed cuts. Shop online and in store at UP THERE in Melbourne, Australia.

An overcoat is the single largest thing most people wear, which makes it the piece where cloth quality is hardest to disguise. A good wool holds its shape through a season of wear and rain. A poor one goes limp and shiny at the seat and elbows within months.

The cut matters as much as the cloth. A raglan balmacaan is the more forgiving shape and layers over almost anything. A set-in shoulder chesterfield is sharper and pairs better with tailoring. Length is a matter of proportion, but anything that stops mid-thigh tends to read as a jacket rather than a coat.

A.PRESSE works from mid-century patterns with unusually heavy cloth. Margaret Howell keeps it restrained. Kapital takes the shape somewhere else entirely.

Looking for something specific?

What length should an overcoat be?

Knee length or just below covers a suit jacket and most of the leg without looking severe. Shorter than mid-thigh and it reads as a jacket. Longer than mid-calf is a commitment worth being sure about.

What is the difference between a balmacaan and a chesterfield?

The shoulder. A balmacaan has a raglan sleeve, which makes it more forgiving and easier to layer over anything. A chesterfield has a set-in shoulder, which is sharper and sits better with tailoring.

What wool weight should an overcoat be?

For a Melbourne winter, 500 to 700 grams per metre is usually enough. Heavier melton over 800 grams is genuinely cold-weather cloth and can be too much here outside a few weeks.

How do you stop an overcoat going shiny?

Shine comes from fibres being crushed flat, usually at the seat and elbows. Brush after wear, do not sit in it where avoidable, and rest it between wears. Press with steam rather than a hot dry iron.

Should an overcoat be sized up?

Only enough to fit a jacket underneath comfortably. Most overcoats are already cut with that allowance, so taking your usual size is normally correct.
