The field jacket is one of the few garments that has survived intact from its military origin. The M-65 pattern from 1965 is still the reference: four bellows pockets, a drawcord waist, a stand collar with a hood stowed inside.

It works because the proportions are right. Long enough to cover, roomy enough to layer a knit under, structured enough to hold a shape without being formal. It sits comfortably over a hoodie or under an overcoat.

Engineered Garments and orSlow both work directly from military patterns with their own adjustments. Nanamica applies the shape to technical fabric. Kapital treats it as a canvas.

What is an M-65 field jacket?

A US military pattern from 1965 with four bellows pockets, a drawcord waist, a stand collar and a hood stowed in the collar. It remains the reference point for almost every field jacket made since.

How should a field jacket fit?

With enough room to layer a knit or hoodie underneath, since that is what it was designed for. The shoulder should sit close to the natural shoulder line, and the hem should cover the seat of the trouser.

Is a field jacket warm enough for winter?

On its own, not in a cold winter. It is a three-season jacket that becomes a winter one once a knit or a liner goes underneath. Some versions include a removable liner.
