The chore coat came out of French factories and farms in the late nineteenth century, dyed in the blue that later gave the bleu de travail its name. Three patch pockets, a straight boxy body, and nothing else.

It has stayed useful because it is the least demanding jacket to wear. It goes over a tee in spring, over a knit in autumn, and under a heavier coat in winter. The plain front means it does not compete with whatever is underneath.

orSlow and Kapital run the Japanese interpretation, usually in heavier or more textured cloth. MHL keeps it closest to the original. Engineered Garments adjusts the pattern until it is recognisably its own.

What is bleu de travail?

The French term for the indigo-dyed cotton work clothing worn in factories and on farms from the late 1800s. The chore coat is its best-known garment, and the colour name has stuck to the whole category.

What do you wear a chore coat over?

Almost anything. A tee in spring, a knit or sweatshirt in autumn, and under a heavier coat in winter. The plain front is what makes it work, since it does not compete with what is underneath.

How should a chore coat fit?

Boxy and slightly wide, with room to layer. The shoulder can sit a little past the natural shoulder line. If it fits like a blazer, it is too small.

No, the terms are used interchangeably. Some brands use coat for longer versions and jacket for hip-length ones, but there is no consistent rule.
