N-1 Quilt Jacket - Olive

$1,580 AUD

The N-1 deck jacket was issued to US Navy crews in the 1940s, built from tightly woven jungle cloth with a heavy alpaca pile lining. It was designed to be worn on deck in the North Atlantic, which tells you most of what you need to know about how warm it is.

The shape is short and wide, which puts it at odds with a slim trouser and completely at home with a wide leg or a pleated cut. The pile collar is the defining detail.

orSlow reproduces the original closely. Kapital and Rocky Mountain Featherbed both take liberties with it. Nanamica applies the shape to modern technical fabric.

Looking for something specific?

What is an N-1 deck jacket?

A US Navy jacket from the 1940s built in tightly woven jungle cloth with a heavy alpaca pile lining and a pile collar. It was made for deck work in the North Atlantic, which is why it is unusually warm for its length.

Is a deck jacket warm?

Very. The alpaca or wool pile lining makes it one of the warmest short jackets available, often warmer than a longer wool coat.

What trousers suit a deck jacket?

Wide or pleated cuts. The N-1 is short and broad, which conflicts with a slim trouser and balances well against volume through the leg.

Is a deck jacket waterproof?

The original jungle cloth is water resistant rather than waterproof. Modern technical versions from labels like Nanamica use membrane fabrics that genuinely are.
