The bomber covers more ground than any other jacket shape. The same ribbed hem and cuff appear on a nylon MA-1, a wool varsity, a suede blouson and a tailored jacket, and each reads completely differently.

That range is what makes it useful. A nylon bomber is the most casual outer layer that still looks deliberate. A leather or suede blouson from A.PRESSE works over tailoring. Needles sits somewhere between the two with track and satin versions.

Fit is the thing to get right. The hem should sit at or just below the waistband, and the ribbing should hold without gripping. Too long and the proportion collapses.

Looking for something specific?

What is an MA-1?

A US Air Force flight jacket pattern in nylon with a ribbed collar, cuff and hem, a reversible orange lining and a sleeve pocket. It is the most copied bomber shape and the most casual version of the silhouette.

How should a bomber jacket fit?

The hem should sit at or just below the waistband and the ribbing should hold without gripping. The body can be roomy, but a bomber that is too long loses the proportion entirely.

Can a bomber be worn with tailoring?

A leather, suede or wool bomber, yes. A nylon MA-1 sits too casual for most tailoring. A.PRESSE cuts blousons specifically to work in that context.

What is the difference between a bomber and a blouson?

Mostly terminology. Blouson usually implies a softer, more tailored version in leather, suede or wool, where bomber implies the military nylon lineage. Both share the ribbed hem and cuff.
