Taqwa Bint Ali's adidas Megaride Mary Jane

The Taqwa Bint Ali x adidas Megaride Mary Jane releases at Up There online on January 22.

Multi-hyphenate creative Taqwa Bint Ali and the adidas Megaride are the latest to enter the Mary Jane sneaker chat.

Transforming an otherwise unisex-facing silhouette into a women's-specific shoe, together they infused the adidas Megaride with Avant-garde, feminine design language giving it a much desired balletcore aesthetic.

While there are few brands who are yet to tap into the Mary Jane sneaker hybrid renaissance, it's less about capitalising on the demand as it is about doing it authentically.

Taqwa  – who is a model, film director and creative director – says her vision for the project was "to be relatable to all groups of girls", especially in the cities that are so dear to her heart. Far more from just being a product with a name slapped on it, Taqwa was involved from the shoe design process, down to working in front and behind the camera, as well as on image production and styling.

Retaining a large bulk of the Megaride's OG tooling, it wouldn't be a Mary Jane with laces – which have been switched out for velcro straps adorned with its collaborator's namesake. Below, the Megaride's noteable A3 outsole technology underfoot – resembling small tunnels – is a solid reminder of the shoe's Y2K roots. Coming correct in an iron metallic colourway is just the icing on the cake.

The Taqwa Bint Ali x adidas Megaride Mary Jane will become available to shop online at Up There at 12am AEDT January 22.
