Air Trainer 1 - Limestone/Valerian Blue/Ale Brown
Since bursting onto the scene in 1987 on the feet of infamous tennis player John McEnroe, the Nike Air Trainer 1 reset the benchmark for multi-disciplinary sneakers. Created by none-other than Nike superstar designer Tinker Hatfield, the Air Trainer 1 became the first shoe to be labelled as a "cross trainer". At this point it feels like every shoe that isn't a hyper-focussed performance item is given that moniker but Nike blazed a trail with this shoe.
'87 was a big year for Nike, not least because the Air Max 1 launched the visible Air window concept onto the world stage but the AT1 was a revolution in a different sense. The lateral outrigger, midfoot strap, encapsulated Air-Sole unit in the heel and a rubber outsole all worked to create a shoe capable of tackling anything the lay-person would be able to throw at them. A true do-it-all type of design.
With all of that history it's always pleasant to see the Air Trainer get a bit of love from the Nike design team. This version uses a similar perforated white leather base to the OGs. The light beige and tan overlays accented with navy blue are a departure from the original. The final detail of some sections of true gum on the outsole add a touch of class we can appreciate.
