Rainier - Rain Cloud
What you're looking at is likely the most famous New Balance you've never hear of. Originally released in 1982 the Rainier was touted as a go-anywhere boot which incorporated running ideology to make for a lightweight, cushioned yet durable ride. And go anywhere it did, being the shoe of choice of alpinists around the world. Its reputation was cemented when – on the feet of mountaineer Lou Whittaker – it ascended Mt Everest's North Col. This feat was the first time any American climbers had achieved it, allowing the Rainier to enter the history books.
Now the shoe returns just after celebrating its 40th anniversary. Seen here in a contemporary colourway – iconic New Balance shades of grey – its tough construction can handle anything a city slicker might throw at it. A grippy Vibram® outsole allows you to traverse even the most uneven of sidewalks whilst the classic foam midsole will cushion your step off the bus.
