The New Balance MT580 might just be one of the most impactful sneakers of the last 30 years – an odd statement to be making about a budget-conscious model. After a steady start, the 580 exploded in 1999 when New Balance Japan developed a unique partnership with Mita Sneakers, a retailer based in Ueno, and Real MadHECTIC, a Tokyo streetwear label. Together, NB and the Japanese partners created unique colourways of the MT580 and kickstarted a trend that completely changed the industry.
This multicoloured extravaganza is inspired by the iconic UNDTFD x Real MadHECTIC x Stüssy "Triple Threat" series originally released in 2006. The wild mix of colours is evocative of the early-2000s obsessions with candy coloured psychedelic colourways. After a few years of being sidetracked with anything monotone and muted, this technicolour fever dream is a nice change of pace.
