After a steady start, the MT580 exploded in 1999 when New Balance Japan developed a unique partnership with Mita Sneakers, a retailer based in Ueno, and Real MadHECTIC, a Tokyo streetwear label. Whilst common practice now, the idea of a "collaboration" sneaker in 1999 was unheard of. Together, NB and the Japanese partners created unique colours of the MT580 and kickstarted a trend that completely changed the industry.

Any New Balance aficionado worth their weight will be able to recognise the colours on this MT580. They represent an homage to the iconic Stussy x Real MadHECTIC "Real Mad Stussy" collaboration released in 2004. The collab comprised of two complimentary 580 colourways which released together.

This pair – being inspired by the MT580TB "Thrush/Beige" – features uppers in brown nubuck with beige accents. The original mesh is swapped out for yellow "Golden Rod" mesh – off the MT580AG "Avocado/Golden Rod" sibling from 2004. Aside from a flip on the nylon mesh between the two colourways, the rest of the makeup remains true to the original inspiration.
