In the spring of 1978 New Balance gave their designers the go-ahead to develop a new shoe. The brief was simple: make the best running shoe, regardless of how long it took or how much it cost. After five years of development they launched 990 – the most advanced, most expensive running shoe the world had ever seen. The legacy of the 990 was born.

Often overlooked for younger 990 models, the original is only rolled out on particular occasions. This very green iteration comes in heavy with the textures – combining a nylon upper with rough-cut suede to great effect, harkening back to the colours used on other runners at the time of the 990's release. Topping things off is the warm yellow N on the side, making these quite the departure from the all-grey roots of the original 990.
